Woman dies, several faint in stampede during BISP cash distribution in Karachi

KARACHI, JUN 26 (DNA) — A woman died on Monday while several others sustained injuries and fainted in a stampede during cash distribution under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) in Kemari, Karachi.

According to the rescue sources, eight women were shifted to the Trauma Centre of Civil Hospital in a state of unconsciousness. “Cash was being distributed under the BISP. Most of the women fainted due to hot weather. No one has complained about the stampede,” police claimed.

 “The situation is fine at the moment,” they added. The disbursement of stipends under Benazir Income Support Program was resumed on Monday which was suspended for two days due to intense heat. 

According to spokesperson of BISP, the process of payment of stipends will continue till Wednesday. However, the process will start again on the 3rd of next month. These stipends are provided to nine million families across the country on a quarterly basis of nine thousand rupees per deserving family.

On the directives of Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Shazia Marri, monitoring teams have been constituted to ensure the transparent disbursement of stipends to marginalized sections of society.
