ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries, Haroon Akhtar Khan, has said that the federal government is fully committed to resolving issues faced by women and providing them with the facilities needed to participate effectively in the economy. He emphasized that empowering women through small enterprises is a key government priority. “More than 50 percent of Pakistan’s population is female, yet we are operating with only half of our available workforce,” he noted. “Women must contribute actively to the journey of economic development.”
He expressed these views while addressing the International Women Entrepreneurship Day event, jointly organised by the FPCCI and SMEDA on Wednesday.
The ceremony was attended by FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh, SMEDA CEO Nadia, FPCCI Vice President Qurat-ul-Ain, Tariq Jadoon, Chairman Capital Office Karim Aziz Malik, Chairman Coordination and President Hafizabad Chamber Malik Suhail Hussain, and several other dignitaries.
Speaking on the occasion, FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh said women are not only participants in the economic landscape but also a driving force behind innovation and sustainable growth. He praised Haroon Akhtar Khan’s vision and support for women’s empowerment within SMEs and the broader business sector. He also acknowledged the contributions of FPCCI Vice President Qurat-ul-Ain in advancing women’s entrepreneurial development.
“Pakistan cannot progress while leaving half of its population behind,” he said. “The future of our economy and sustainable development depends on the active involvement of women. Today, women-led businesses are transforming industries. Despite challenges, women entrepreneurs across Pakistan are breaking barriers, generating employment, and developing strong brands.”
He added that FPCCI, in collaboration with SMEDA, is committed to capacity-building and training programmes aimed at supporting women entrepreneurs and enhancing their business skills.
Addressing the gathering, SMEDA CEO Nadia reaffirmed the government’s commitment to economically empowering women through the Small and Medium Enterprises sector. She said women could be empowered through improved access to financing and robust skills development initiatives.
The event concluded with a unified call for greater inclusion of women in Pakistan’s economic activities, underscoring that their active role is essential for the country’s long-term growth and prosperity.
