Islamabad: Russia’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Albert P. Khorev, reaffirmed the strength of Russia-Pakistan relations in an exclusive interview with a private news channel. Addressing key diplomatic and strategic matters, he highlighted that modern Russia-Pakistan ties are based on mutual respect, equality, and a shared vision for regional stability, free from external influence.
Khorev dismissed speculations of any hidden agenda behind the growing ties between Moscow and Islamabad, stating that their partnership is not directed against any third country. He emphasized that despite significant geopolitical shifts, the relationship between the two nations continues to thrive, contrary to Western expectations.
On matters of security, the ambassador underscored Russia’s active cooperation with Pakistan in countering terrorism, narcotics, and information security threats. He highlighted the robust collaboration in multilateral forums such as the United Nations (UN) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), where Moscow and Islamabad have historically demonstrated solidarity.
“We are quite positive about our counterterrorism and counternarcotics cooperation with Pakistan,” said Khorev. “Regular bilateral expert dialogues, including the Joint Working Group on Combating Terrorism and Other Contemporary Threats, play a vital role in strengthening our strategic partnership.”
Khorev also spoke about the increasing cultural exchanges between Russia and Pakistan, pointing out the growing enthusiasm among Pakistani citizens to learn the Russian language. He acknowledged the vast potential for cooperation in art, sports, education, youth exchanges, and tourism, reflecting a broader people-to-people connection between the two nations.
Economic cooperation was another key area of discussion. The ambassador appreciated the role of Pakistan’s Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) in fostering bilateral trade and investment. “We look forward to further increasing trade turnover and strengthening direct ties between the business communities of our countries,” he stated.
Addressing the security situation in Afghanistan and its impact on Pakistan, Khorev noted that the primary responsibility for tackling terrorism in the region lies with the affected nations. However, he expressed Russia’s willingness to mediate between Islamabad and Kabul if both parties find it appropriate. He pointed to the Moscow Format of Consultations as a viable platform for diplomatic resolution.
The interview underscored Russia’s commitment to deepening its engagement with Pakistan across multiple sectors. With shared strategic interests and expanding cooperation, both nations appear set to further solidify their partnership in the years ahead.
