KARACHI, JAN 19: A devastating fire at Gul Plaza in Karachi has resulted in 10 fatalities, including a firefighter. More than 50 people are reported missing following the blaze, which broke out on Sunday.
The fire remained uncontrolled even after 20 hours. Over 30 people were injured. The ground and mezzanine floors were completely gutted, with sections of the weakened structure collapsing.
The fire destroyed goods worth millions, wiping out the savings of hundreds of shopkeepers. Authorities have set up a help desk to register complaints from families searching for missing relatives.
Among the missing are a mall employee named Arif and four women from one family who were wedding shopping. Witnesses reported hearing voices from inside the building.
Firefighting operations continue with three snorkels and multiple tenders. Crews face severe danger from extreme heat and structural instability.
Traders’ leader Atiq Mir estimated losses near Rs3 billion. He urged the government for a relief package and announced a city-wide day of mourning.
