OIC-COMSTECH, IUT conclude international training on Strategic Science Communication

ISLAMABAD, Apr 21: The OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH), in collaboration with the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), successfully concluded a two-day international training workshop titled “Strategic Science Communication: Building Bridges Between Scientists and Journalists for Knowledge Advancement in Gazipur, Bangladesh.

The workshop brought together participants from across OIC Member States, including Pakistan, to strengthen science communication capacity and foster collaboration between scientists, journalists, and policymakers.
The closing ceremony marked the culmination of an impactful program, where 48 participants from 15 countries were awarded certificates and prizes in recognition of their successful completion.


In his remarks, Vice Chancellor, IUT, Prof. Rafiqul Islam appreciated the diverse international participation and reaffirmed IUT’s commitment to academic excellence, international cooperation, and capacity building in science and technology.


Earlier, at the inaugural session, Coordinator General COMSTECH, Prof. Iqbal Choudhary emphasized that in today’s rapidly evolving world, science must extend beyond laboratories and reach society in a clear, credible, and impactful manner.


He highlighted that effective science communication is essential for improving public understanding, supporting evidence-based policymaking, and strengthening trust in science.
He pointed out the growing gap between scientific communities and the public, often exacerbated by misinformation in the age of artificial intelligence. He stressed the need for science communication to act as a bridge connecting researchers, media, policymakers, and society.


He further noted that empowering scientists with communication skills is critical to addressing global challenges such as climate change, public health crises, and sustainable development.
The participants highly appreciated the training program, describing it as practically relevant and professionally enriching. Many expressed interest in replicating similar initiatives in their home institutions.


The successful conclusion of the workshop reflects COMSTECH’s continued commitment to strengthening science communication, promoting regional cooperation, and fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and innovation across OIC Member States, including Pakistan.
