ISLAMABAD: Acting President Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani stated that sustained efforts are required to ensure global peace, as the world today is undergoing a phase of transformation. He highlighted that serious challenges such as climate change demand urgent attention and emphasized the need to adapt to evolving global realities.
He further remarked that this is a time for unity, recalling that such unity was demonstrated when India attacked Pakistan, and Pakistan responded as a responsible nuclear state.
He underscored that Pakistan is a responsible nuclear state, and although India not only carried out an attack but also unilaterally revoked the Indus Water Treaty, Pakistan exercised restraint while reserving its right to defend itself.
He said that Pakistan only responded in self defence. Mr. Gilani added that Pakistan’s brave armed forces and political leadership, through their unity, sent a clear message to the world that Pakistan is a responsible nuclear state. Addressing the participants, he noted that Pakistan had called for an independent inquiry into the Pahalgam incident, but India did not respond. He said that Pakistan’s narrative was appreciated globally.
Mr. Gilani emphasized the need to align with emerging global challenges, including technological advancement and climate change. He highlighted Pakistan’s responsible and proactive role in promoting peace, dialogue, and regional stability, noting that the country’s diplomatic efforts are being recognized internationally. He further observed that Pakistan’s mediation efforts for stability in the region particularly diplomatic initiatives to reduce tensions and build mutual trust between Iran and US are being acknowledge by the international community. He said that Pakistan will continue to support peace in the region and beyond.
Addressing the participants, the Acting President remarked that GCU Lahore has, for over a century and a half, produced outstanding leaders, thinkers, and public servants who have contributed significantly to national development. He noted that the institution fosters independent thinking and character-building, which remain its defining strengths.
On the occasion, he also referred to his book, Chah-e-Yousaf Se Sada, which he wrote during his time in prison. Reflecting on his student life, he described his identity as an “Old Ravian” as one of his proudest distinctions and appreciated the strong bonds of friendship and shared experiences that continue to unite alumni. He urged the Old Ravians Association to establish structured mentorship initiatives to guide younger graduates and help them navigate evolving professional landscapes.
Commending the efforts of the Association, including Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar and General Secretary Shahbaz Ahmed Sheikh, he assured his full support in strengthening alumni engagement and contributing to the continued excellence of GCU Lahore. The Acting President concluded by encouraging alumni to remain connected and committed to their alma mater, emphasizing that the true legacy of the institution lies in enduring relationships and shared values.
