TAORMINA: The Group of Seven countries have strongly condemned the heavy-handed crackdown committed by Myanmar’s military against anti-coup protesters.

In a joint statement,  the foreign ministers of the G-7 countries, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, and the United States as well as the European Union’s high representative for foreign policy, urged the Myanmar security forces to exercise utmost restraint and respect human rights and international law.

The G-7 also called for an end to the systematic targeting of protesters, doctors, civil society and journalists and for the military junta to revoke its declared state of emergency.

Meanwhile, European Union Foreign Ministers have agreed to impose sanctions on Myanmar’s military over its coup earlier this month.
