ISLAMABAD, AUG 24 (DNA) — A district and sessions court in Islamabad on Wednesday rejected an extension in the physical remand of PTI senior leader Shahbaz Gill, who has been arrested in connection with a sedition case registered against him.
The state prosecutor sought an extension of seven days in Gill’s physical remand, but Judicial Magistrate Malik Amman rejected the plea and instead sent the PTI leader to jail on judicial remand.
Rejecting the police’s request for extension in the physical remand of Shahbaz Gill, the court of a judicial magistrate sent him to Adiala Jail on judicial remand. Earlier, the court reserved its verdict on the petition filed by the police for extension in PTI’s leader’s physical remand by seven days.
Informing the court that the police were still interrogating the PTI leader in connection with his anti-Pakistan Army remarks during a talk show on a private TV channel, Special Prosecutor said that the police were still to recover cellphone from the suspect. “Apart from that he also has to undergo polygraphic and the investigation officer (IO) was to look into it whether further interrogation from him was required.
Speaking on the occasion, Faisal Chaudhry Advocate, Gill’s counsel, opposed the police’s request for extension in his client’s remand and told the court that the PTI leader was a professor and it was height of cruelty that he was stripped naked before being beaten.
Faisal said he had been associated with the legal profession for the past 20 years, and he earned nothing but respect. “Gill was subjected to brutal torture, which should not have happened,” he said, adding that now even the prosecution had admitted that it had failed to complete the interrogation.
He was of the view that the court was right when it asked the police about its findings in the case. “All that police could manage was half-an-hour raid on the PTI leader’s residence in Parliament Lodges along with some blue-eyed media personnel,” Gill’s counsel told the court.
The Islamabad police had on Tuesday August 9, 2022 arrested PTI leader Shahbaz Gill from the limits of Banigala police station after he made some seditious remarks against the Pakistan Army during a talk show on a private TV channel.
Sources said that the police later registered the case against Gill under sections that included using derogatory remarks against sensitive state institutions. He was taken into custody from outside Imran Khan’s residence at Banigala Chowk of the federal capital.
The Islamabad police after arresting the PTI leader shifted him to an unknown place. Earlier, Shahbaz Gill was produced in the court of the judicial magistrate in Islamabad on the completion of his two-day physical remand.
The court, however, reserved its verdict but allowed Shahbaz Gill to hold meeting with his lawyers inside the courtroom. Police have already registered the case of possession of illegal arms against the PTI leader. =DNA
