APBF welcomes govt’s AI initiative, calls for more business-friendly incentives

Maaz Mahmood says AI-focused policies can transform Pakistan into a regional tech powerhouse

ISLAMABAD, MAY 10 /DNA/ – The All Pakistan Business Forum (APBF) has welcomed the federal government’s decision to launch 20,000 artificial intelligence (AI) training programmes under the National AI Advancement Initiative (NAIAI), terming it a timely and visionary step towards preparing Pakistan for the future digital economy.

In a joint statement, APBF President Syed Maaz Mahmood and Chairman Ibrahim Qureshi said the initiative reflects the government’s growing seriousness in equipping Pakistan’s youth, freelancers, entrepreneurs and professionals with globally competitive AI and digital skills.

They stated that Pakistan possesses immense untapped potential in the technology and freelance sectors due to its large young population, and such training programmes can significantly enhance the country’s exports, employment opportunities and economic productivity.

“Artificial intelligence is reshaping every industry worldwide. Pakistan cannot afford to remain behind in this technological revolution. The government’s initiative to provide structured AI training to graduates, professionals, freelancers and public-sector employees is a highly encouraging development,” said APBF President Syed Maaz Mahmood.

He added that the introduction of AI-focused learning management systems and specialised certification programmes would help create a skilled workforce capable of competing in international markets, especially in the Gulf region, Europe and North America.

Mahmood further stressed that AI adoption would not only strengthen Pakistan’s IT exports but also modernise key sectors including healthcare, agriculture, education, manufacturing, logistics and e-commerce.

Chairman APBF Ibrahim Qureshi said that the business community fully supports all practical initiatives aimed at promoting innovation, digital transformation and technology-driven entrepreneurship in Pakistan.

“Pakistan’s future economic growth depends heavily on digitalisation and knowledge-based industries. AI training programmes can create thousands of new opportunities for startups, SMEs, freelancers and technology companies,” he remarked.

However, the APBF president emphasised that training programmes alone would not be sufficient unless accompanied by strong business-friendly incentives and supportive policies.

The forum urged the government to introduce further incentives for the IT sector, including tax facilitation for technology startups, easier access to venture capital, reduced compliance burdens for freelancers and exporters, improved internet infrastructure, and subsidised digital skill development programmes for youth.

Maaz Mahmood also called for stronger collaboration between universities, private technology companies and industry stakeholders to ensure that AI education remains aligned with international market demands.

“Pakistan needs a complete digital ecosystem where innovation is encouraged, businesses are facilitated and young professionals are empowered through practical skills and modern infrastructure,” said Ibrahim Qureshi.

Ibrahim Qureshi said that the business leaders also recommended introducing AI and coding education at school and college levels to build a future-ready workforce from an early age.

They expressed hope that the National AI Policy 2025 would be implemented effectively through public-private partnerships and continuous investment in digital infrastructure, research and innovation.

The APBF leadership said that with consistent policy support, investor confidence and advanced skill development initiatives, Pakistan has the potential to emerge as a leading regional hub for AI services, freelancing and digital exports in the coming years.
