Educational opportunities provided for dozens of prisoners in Herat prison

KABUL, MAR 27: Officials at Herat Prison said that they have provided illiterate prisoners with opportunities to learn literacy and recite the Holy Quran.

Recently, nearly 130 prisoners have graduated after completing courses in literacy and recitation of holy Quran.

The literacy and Quran memorization courses at Herat Prison range from four months to two years.

Mohammad Nabi Khalil, the director of Herat Prison, said, “Approximately 75 individuals have graduated as reciters and about 50 have graduated from the literacy section.”

Several prisoners said that they have learned to read and write over several months of literacy training.

Gholam Dastgir, a prisoner, said, “This is not a prison, this is a university for anyone who takes advantage of it.”

According to officials at Herat Prison, nearly a hundred other prisoners are currently engaged in vocational training.

Officials added that in the women’s and children’s sections of Herat Prison, school books and vocational training are provided.

Nematullah Ershad, the head of the children’s section at Herat Prison, said, “We have 78 prisoners in the school section, for whom teachers come from the Ministry of Education to teach.”

According to statistics from Herat Prison, nearly two thousand prisoners, including women and children, are imprisoned in separate sections of the prison.
