Former NATO chief Javier Solana has made a bold statement as he described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the “worst politician” in the history of Israel.
He made these remarks while discussing the recent events in Israel and Palestine.
Solana expressed scepticism about the potential positive outcomes of these events but suggested that they might lead to Netanyahu’s exit from Israeli politics.
Despite the historical US support for Israel, ex-NATO chief pointed out that President Joe Biden doesn’t hold a favourable view of Netanyahu.
In fact, he emphasized that Biden has been actively working to discourage Netanyahu from repeating the mistakes made by the US, particularly in the context of Iraq post the 9/11 attack.
Furthermore, Solana highlighted that there isn’t a strong rapport between Biden and Netanyahu. Despite their interactions, Biden never hosted Netanyahu in the White House.
The former NATO chief criticized Netanyahu’s attempts to strengthen his authority through judicial reforms to turn himself into an autocrat.
He also shared his opinion on the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Bahrain.
The former NATO official considered this a “huge mistake” arguing that it diverted from the previous approach of countries recognizing Israel through peace negotiations with Palestine.
He described the earlier notion of “recognition for peace” as a beautiful idea that had been set aside.
In the context before the Hamas attack, Solana’s career had him spending considerable time in Gaza, including his role in negotiating for the EU to supervise the Rafah border crossing from Gaza into Egypt.
This program commenced in 2005 and lasted for 19 months.
