India’s withdrawal from ICJ case a victory for Pakistan: FO

ISLAMABAD, AUG 22: Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan Friday welcomed the International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision on India’s violation of the Indus Waters Treaty.

He said India had illegally suspended the treaty, but the court made it clear that New Delhi could not unilaterally suspend the agreement.

The spokesperson added that the court also observed that India was failing to comply with the treaty in an unlawful manner. The ICJ reaffirmed the treaty’s importance for both countries.

According to Khan, India refused to contest the case before the ICJ, and its withdrawal itself was Pakistan’s victory.

Commenting on Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to Islamabad, the spokesperson said he arrived with a high-level delegation at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar to attend strategic dialogue. Wang Yi also held meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and the Army Chief.

The spokesperson said President Zardari thanked China for its defense cooperation and support to Pakistan on the Kashmir issue. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed gratitude to Beijing for its all-out support and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties.
