Islamic Emirate welcomes UN office for regional development

KABUL, AUG 4: The Islamic Emirate has welcomed the establishment of a new United Nations regional office for sustainable development aimed at Afghanistan and Central Asia.

The Deputy Spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate stated that stability in Afghanistan is beneficial for regional peace and development, and the caretaker government supports any initiative contributing to this goal.

Hamdullah Fitrat, Deputy Spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, said: “We welcome every positive step and constructive vision that supports Afghanistan. Regional and international cooperation with Afghanistan must be strengthened. It is a fact that Afghanistan’s development and stability contribute to the stability of the entire region. The Islamic Emirate seeks constructive engagement with all parties.”

This regional office was established at the initiative of the United Nations and is hosted by Kazakhstan, with the goal of advancing sustainable development objectives across Central Asia and Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the President of Kazakhstan has reiterated his country’s support for the Afghan people and emphasized that long-term peace and sustainable development in Afghanistan are vital for ensuring regional security.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan said: “Kazakhstan remains committed to supporting Afghans through humanitarian assistance, educational projects, trade, and food security initiatives. The volume of trade between our countries is steadily increasing. We believe that peace and development in Afghanistan must go hand in hand. Human dignity and international law are inseparable and form a core part of efforts for lasting stability.”

Political analyst Saleem Paygir stated: “The newly opened office in Central Asia for regional support and development concerning Afghanistan could be very effective. However, it would have been more impactful if such offices were directly established in Kabul or other parts of Afghanistan.”

Economic analyst Mohammad Karim Azimi added: “Offices established outside the country for the purpose of economic development will not be effective or beneficial if Afghanistan is not represented in them.”

Previously, during the opening ceremony of the office, the UN Secretary-General emphasized that Afghanistan urgently needs regional and international support.
Antonio Guterres added that this center can play an important role in enhancing coordination and shared responsibility in support of the Afghan people.
