ISLAMABAD, Jul 7 (APP/DNA):NDMA Tech Team Lead & Spokesperson Dr. Tayyab Shah said on Monday that all concerned departments have been instructed to take preventive steps as Southern Punjab is likely to face heavy rainfall this year, with alerts already issued.

In an exclusive conversation with a local news channel, NDMA Tech Team Lead and Spokesperson Dr. Tayyab Shah

called for heightened readiness across the country amid forecasts predicting heavy monsoon rains and potential glacier melting, which could trigger flash floods and other related disasters.

He emphasized the importance of proactive measures by local administrations and urged residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert through official warnings to minimize risks during the upcoming monsoon season.

He stated that the NDMA has been actively conducting coordination conferences with all relevant stakeholders to ensure timely and effective response mechanisms are in place across the country.

Dr. Shah highlighted that monsoon projections indicate the possibility of flash floods, riverine floods, and torrential rainfall in several regions.

In light of this, the NDMA has already issued alerts to concerned institutions and provincial authorities, urging them to take proactive measures to mitigate potential damage and ensure public safety.

He stressed that local administrations and relevant departments should keep necessary machinery and dewatering pumps ready for immediate drainage operations.

He also advised residents in flood-prone areas to stay informed through official warnings broadcast on television and mobile alerts.

He further added that early warning systems have been activated, and hotspot areas vulnerable to flooding have been identified in various cities across multiple provinces. These steps are part of NDMA’ s broader strategy to enhance disaster preparedness and minimize the impact of severe weather events during the monsoon season.

The public is advised to stay informed about weather updates and potential hazards through the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App, he added.

He mentioned that areas expected to be affected include Narowal, Gujrat, Wazirabad, Faisalabad, and Muzaffargarh in Punjab, the northern parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as various regions in Sindh and Balochistan.

He also issued a warning regarding the risk of glacier melting in northern areas, which could further aggravate the flood situation.

He added that NDMA began issuing seasonal advisories as early as April and has been continuously updating them based on evolving weather patterns.

He also advised that general public should avoid crossing fast-flowing streams, bridges and submerged roads. Residents of low-lying areas should make early arrangements to move valuables and livestock to safer locations.
