PIA says ‘Enough to Harassment’

KARACHI, DEC 05 (DNA) – PIA partenering with the UN’s Women Agency and Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment vows make efforts to curb harrassment and gender violence onboard and onground.  The commitment was made as part of UN’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence campaign.

A seminar was also held at PIA Office in Islamabad whereby a detailed briefing on the laws and initiatives were conducted by the country rep of United Nations (UN) Women Pakistan Ms. Sharmeela Rassool and the Federal Ombudsperson for protection against Harassment (FOSPAH) Ms. Kashmala Tariq to the leadership team of PIA and other senior officials, with an objective to promote safe mobility for women and to prevent harassment of women at work and public places.

It was decided that PIA will start a campaign in this regard onboard to create awareness as thousands of people travel with PIA everyday. All PIA work places including its lounges at airports and on board the aircraft and public places to be made free from harrasment and necessary regulations and SOPs will be adopted to ensure prevention.

CEO PIA Air Marshal (Retd) Arshad Malik said that PIA will take all necessary steps in educating and providing information for protection against harrasment, the law and its consequences. PIA is the only airline working with United Nations to eradicate harrasment against Women.

Sharmeela Rassool, country representative of UN Women Pakistan, said Pakistan with the contribution of women can emerge and be among the fast developing nations in the World. She said the biggest impediment for women to serve their role in the development of the country is safe mobility. She said that if the Government wants to achieve the goal of becoming 10th largest economy on its 100th birthday, the women which contribute 50 percent of the population must start contributing in the economy.

PIA’s will champion the slogan ‘ab bus’ or ‘enough’ to harassment on all areas under its control.
