ISLAMABAD, Oct 27 (DNA):The Supreme Court has questioned the performance of Punjab Police over its failure to arrest an accused despite the rejection of his bail applications by the trial court and the High Court, asking why he had not been taken into custody.
The court observed that Punjab Police had failed to arrest accused persons even in serious cases, including murder, despite the rejection of their bail applications.
During the hearing of a bail petition in a cheque dishonour case, Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan questioned a Punjab Police official, asking why the accused had not been arrested despite the rejection of his bail pleas by the trial court and the high court.
He observed that the accused had approached the Supreme Court without bail.
Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan remarked sarcastically that, given such performance, the court should recommend the official for appointment as inspector general of police.
Justice Shakeel Ahmad observed that it had become routine for Punjab Police not to arrest accused persons after the rejection of their bail applications, adding that even in murder cases, arrests were not made following the dismissal of bail pleas.
During the hearing, Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan asked the accused’s counsel whether he would withdraw the petition himself or whether the court should dismiss it on merit. The counsel subsequently withdrew the bail petition.
The court later disposed of the matter after the accused surrendered before the police.
