YouTube is introducing a new feature that will use artificial intelligence to estimate users’ ages.
The update, which takes effect on 13 August 2025, aims to provide a safer and more suitable experience based on a user’s age.
According to the company, the technology will initially be tested on a limited group of users in the United States. It will employ machine learning to assess age by analysing factors such as account history, the categories of watched videos and search activity.
If the system determines that a user may be underage, age-based restrictions will be applied automatically.
Where the AI cannot accurately assess age, users will be able to verify that they are over 18 by submitting official identification, such as a government-issued ID or credit card.
YouTube said the feature will gradually roll out in other countries depending on the results of the initial trial.
The platform claims the new technology will offer improved protection and a more appropriate experience for users, regardless of the date of birth listed on their account. However, the system may introduce certain restrictions for younger users, which some may find unwelcome.
