WASHINGTON, MAY 8 (AFP/APP/DNA):US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would announce a “major trade deal” on Thursday with a “big, and highly respected country.”

Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform, did not identify the country involved, but The New York Times reported that it was Britain, citing multiple people familiar with the plans.

Trump said he would announce the deal at a 10:00 am (1400 GMT) news conference in the Oval Office at the White House.

The president said it would be “a major trade deal with representatives of a big, and highly respected, country.”

He touted the deal as the “first of many.”

Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on US trading partners last month but temporarily froze most of them to allow for the negotiation of trade deals.
