ISLAMABAD, 12 JUN (DNA) — Federal Minister for Human Rights Azam Nazeer Tarar on Friday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to eliminating child labour, saying every child has the right to education, protection, dignity and the opportunity to achieve their full potential. In a message issued on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour, the minister said child labour deprives children of their fundamental rights and undermines their prospects for a secure future.
He stressed that protecting children from exploitation and hazardous work is essential for building a just, inclusive and prosperous society. Tarar noted that despite ongoing efforts, many children remain vulnerable to exploitation and are denied opportunities to learn, develop and realize their potential. He said the government is committed to strengthening child protection systems, expanding access to education and supporting vulnerable families through social protection initiatives.
Highlighting constitutional safeguards, the minister said Article 11 of the Constitution prohibits the employment of children in hazardous occupations, while Article 25-A guarantees free and compulsory education. He added that Pakistan has further strengthened its commitment through the ratification of International Labour Organization Conventions No. 138 and No. 182 on child labour.
The minister emphasized that eliminating child labour requires collective efforts from government institutions, communities, employers, civil society, parents and educators. “Let us renew our commitment to building a Pakistan where every child is safe, educated and empowered to contribute meaningfully to society,” Tarar said, adding that protecting children from exploitation is both a legal responsibility and a moral obligation. — DNA
