Freelance boom powers Pakistan’s digital economy

ISLAMABAD, 12 JUN (DNA) —    Chairman Prime Minister’s Youth Programme (PMYP) Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan on Friday hailed the sharp increase in Pakistani freelancers’ earnings, as highlighted in the Economic Survey 2025-26, saying the growth reflects the talent, innovation and global competitiveness of the country’s youth.

Commenting on the survey findings released by the federal government, Mr Khan said freelance earnings surged from $642 million to $959 million annually, marking a significant contribution to Pakistan’s digital economy and foreign exchange reserves.

The Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26 notes that the remarkable rise in freelance income has been driven by expanding digital opportunities, improved access to technology and the growing participation of young Pakistanis in international online marketplaces.

Rana Mashhood said the achievement demonstrates how Pakistani youth are successfully leveraging digital skills to establish a strong presence in the global economy.He said the government’s initiatives under the Prime Minister’s vision to equip young people with modern IT training and digital skills were yielding tangible results.

According to him, investments in youth-focused technology programmes have enabled thousands of young professionals to secure international clients and generate valuable foreign exchange for the country.The PMYP chairman observed that the expansion of freelancing and the broader digital economy is creating new employment opportunities and opening pathways for economic empowerment.

He added that the government would continue to enhance access to advanced technology, training programmes and global markets to ensure sustained growth in the sector. — DNA
