RAWALPINDI, NOV 22 /DNA/ – The Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) has called for collective efforts from all stakeholders to address the growing issue of SMOG, which is no longer just an environmental problem but a significant economic challenge.
Speaking at a press conference, RCCI President Usman Shaukat expressed grave concern over the adverse effects of SMOG on economic activities and development. Joined by chamber officials and representatives from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), President Usman Shaukat highlighted the disruptions caused by SMOG in business operations, particularly in logistics and supply chains.
He urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to raise the issue of cross-border SMOG with India. “While India is also affected by SMOG, the border areas adjacent to Pakistan face even greater challenges. SMOG is impacting businesses, delaying the transportation of trade shipment containers, and disrupting the supply of raw materials across various sectors, including the pharmaceutical industry,” he stated.
President Shaukat emphasized that urgent steps must be taken to mitigate the effects of SMOG on the economy and public health, particularly in cities like Rawalpindi, which are increasingly vulnerable to this hazard. He called for the active involvement of all stakeholders, including the Environment Department, in addressing this crisis.
Director EPA Dr. Muhammad Zaigham also spoke at the event, outlining measures being implemented to curb environmental damage. “The dumping of garbage is strictly prohibited in all cities, including Rawalpindi. We are preparing recommendations for provincial and district governments regarding proper waste management. Additionally, the introduction of the Electrical Vehicles Policy aims to promote environment-friendly vehicles and reduce emissions,” he explained.
Former RCCI Presidents Dr. Shamail Dawood and Saqib Rafique, along with Senior Vice President Khalid Farooq Qazi and Vice President Fahad Barlas, also addressed the conference. They emphasized the importance of improving environmental standards through initiatives like the Green and Clean Program and urged citizens to refrain from burning garbage.
