ISLAMABAD,):A bunch of former hockey greats will be in action in an exhibition match on Saturday at the Indian Gymkhana Club to support a noble cause – raise funds for Khawaja Junaid Hockey Academy.
The exhibition match will bring together iconic players from world’s different nations, including India, Pakistan, Spain, Germany and England, the event organiser Khawaja Muhammad Junaid said on Friday.
Khawaja Junaid, who has set up an academy to revive Pakistan’s national game by also engaging country’s underprivileged class in hockey is in London for the past few days to raise funds.
He said some of the big names in hockey”s history had come forward to support his cause. The legends include India’s Dhan Raj Pelay, Germany’s Stephen Bloecher, Spain’s Juan Escarre, and a formidable contingent from England featuring Kulbir, Tandil, Balsaini, Ben, and Suti.
“These players, despite being in their 50s and 60s, will showcase the skills and passion that once captivated audiences around the world,” Junaid said. “This match is not just about reliving the past; it’s about celebrating the enduring spirit of hockey,” he said.
According to Junaid, the event will also serve as a fundraiser for the Khawaja Junaid Hockey Academy, which aims to nurture the next generation of hockey talent.
“Before the match, a special coaching clinic will be held where these hockey greats will impart their knowledge to aspiring young players,” he added.
Meanwhile, Indian Gymkhana’s Vice President Ravi Virdi expressed his excitement about the event, emphasizing its significance beyond the game itself. “This match is a testament to the unifying power of hockey. It’s an opportunity for fans to relive memories and for nations to come together through sport,” he said in a statement.
The anticipation for the match has already sparked plans for a return fixture in Pakistan next year, further strengthening the bonds of friendship between the hockey-loving nations.
Ravi asked the fans to turn out in large numbers for what promises to be a thrilling contest filled with nostalgia, competitive spirit and a shared love for the game.
