TEHRAN: Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei on Monday responded to US Vice President JD Vance after the latter said that he wouldn’t call the Iran conflict a “war.”
Last week, Vance said that he would not characterize the US as being at war with Iran.
“I wouldn’t call it a war,” Vance told reporters at a White House press briefing. “Right now, there is no active shooting.”
Baghaei responded on Monday saying in a press briefing that the conflict was not a war but “it is an overt military aggression against Iran’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Baghaei nevertheless, noted that a Qatari delegation was in Iran on Sunday to help de-escalate tension between both the US and Iran amid renewed escalation.
Both countries have continued to trade fire in and around the Strait of Hormuz. Negotiations between the two foes have stalled as they vied for control over Hormuz, which normally carries around a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas exports.
Iran to reciprocate if UN nuclear watchdog adopts resolution against it
Separately, Baghaei warned that Iran will reciprocate if the UN nuclear watchdog adopts a resolution against it.
He added that European states seeking a UN resolution against Iran were “irrational” as the war with the United States has made nuclear facilities inaccessible.
