KARACHI, NOV 26 (DNA) – Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has taken up the issue of Nasla Tower before the chief justice of Pakistan at Karachi registry of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, here on Friday.

In a courageous move, the JI leader in an attempt to fight for the rights of oppressed citizens approached to rostrum during the hearing of a case regarding encroachments in Karachi. With the approval of the top judge, the JI leader took up the issue of Nasla Tower affectees.

He informed the court that he is citizen of Karachi, Pakistan and he has appeared before the court due a problem being faced by the fellow citizens. He said that the affectees of the Nasla Tower case haven’t received any compensation.

In response, the court commented that compensation had already been ordered. The JI leader asked the court to bind the provincial government for collecting due amount from builders and payment to the affectees.

Elaborating his viewpoint, the JI leader made it clear that ordinary citizens couldn’t compel the influential builders to pay the compensation. The provincial government should be bounded in this regard, he said.

“I asked the apex court at least five times to ensure compensation for the affectees of Nasla Tower,” he said while talking to the media after the hearing.

He further said that the JI would not spare the issue and will become a party in the case and legal procedure will be initiated soon in this regard.

He said that the JI in principle stands against any form of encroachment and illegal constructions in the city. However, he said, the party would fight for the rights of buyers who had invested their lifelong savings after cross checking by the then state institutions that the projects were quite legal at that time.

Engr Naeemur Rehman said that the real culprits — the builders, the officials who green signaled and issued  No Objection Certificates to the projects —should be held accountable to fulfill the requisite of justice. He further said that unfortunately in the case of Nasla Tower all those responsible were practically spared and the end users were targeted.

The JI leader made it clear that the Nasla Tower decision by the court came as a result of a suo motu and not the petition by former city nazim and JI leader Late Nematullah Khan. He said that the father of Karachi had filed a case regarding encroachments on parks and amenity plots by the culprits belonging to the MQM, PPP and other political parties.

Talking about the role of the judiciary, he said that the JI had approached and attempted to help the judiciary when the court was shrouded in harassment. He highlighted that the court had constituted a bench on the deadliest tragedy of May 12 but it was time barred due to no activity on the issue.

He also expressed his displeasure and unrest over the situation that the court asked the affectees to receive compensation from the builders but ordered the government to demolish each and every inch of construction on the plot.  = DNA
