ISLAMABAD: PML-N President Nawaz Sharif rushed to Islamabad to garner support for a proposed constitutional amendment. However, his efforts fell short, as the government was unable to present the package for discussion on Sunday.

Nawaz Sharif had also planned to meet Maulana Fazlur Rehman. However, some party leaders advised against it, unless there was certainty that Maulana would be receptive to Nawaz’s request.

Sources indicate that Maulana is dissatisfied with Nawaz Sharif, feeling that despite JUI’s pivotal role in ousting the PTI government, the party was not adequately rewarded in the post-election distribution of power. Maulana firmly believes his party was intentionally denied more seats in parliament.

Meanwhile, after nominating five senators, Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani submitted an additional list of more than eight senators. Parliamentary leaders from the PML-N, PPP, PTI, and other parties were among those nominated. The Senate secretariat had issued a fresh notification in line with the nomination of the senators for the parliamentary committee.

Maulana Fazal has made it clear that his party would not support extension in tenure of the Chief Justice or any extension in service.

Sources say Maulana has taken a principled stand on the issue of extension because next year another extension (army chef) shall be a matter of debate. If Maulana supports the extension of the Chief Justice, then he had to support the other extensions as well.

PML-N parliamentary leader Irfan Siddiqui nominated the member of the special parliamentary committee.

PPP appointed Sherry Rehman, the member of the special parliamentary committee.

Awami National Party (ANP) President Aimal Wali Khan was nominated as the member of the parliamentary committee instead of Umer Farooq.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Maulana Attaur Rehman and Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) Senator Manzoor Ahmed were also part of the committee.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Faisal Sabzwari and Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) Muhammad Qasim.

Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) Raja Nasir Abbasi was also part of the special committee.
