ISLAMABAD, OCT 19: An extraordinary surge in tomato prices has been observed across the country, with rates reaching as high as Rs700 per kilogram in several areas.
According to details surfaced on Sunday in Karachi, tomatoes have become more expensive than poultry. In various parts of the city, they are being sold between Rs500 and Rs700 per kilogram, despite the official rate being set at Rs322.
In Federal B Area, the price has climbed to Rs650 per kilogram, while in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Burns Road, tomatoes are being sold at Rs700.
In Sakrand, a tehsil of Shaheed Benazirabad, tomatoes have reached their highest rate of the year, selling at Rs600 per kilogram. The sharp rise has added to the financial strain on local residents.
Meanwhile, in Faisalabad, shopkeepers have continued to charge inflated prices due to administrative shortcomings. Tomatoes and peas are being sold at Rs500 per kilogram.
In Peshawar, vegetable prices have soared significantly. Tomatoes have crossed the fourth century mark, while onions have also exceeded Rs100 per kilogram. Other vegetables including okra, round gourd, bottle gourd and ridge gourd are not available for less than Rs150 per kilogram.
In Quetta, tomatoes are being sold at Rs300 per kilogram, with peas reaching Rs400. Prices of other vegetables in the city have also witnessed an upward trend.
